About Geer

Our Mission
Our staff of healing professionals' primary goal is to console, treat, heal, strengthen, and refresh the bodies, hearts, minds, and spirits of those whom we serve.
Our Company is a community-owned, locally operated, non-profit corporation composed of 5 inter-related businesses, and we've been serving the Northwest Corner of Connecticut for over forty years. Nestled on seventy acres in the Southern Berkshire Hills and located in historic Canaan Connecticut, it offers a variety of settings to fulfill its mission - to nurture the minds, bodies, and spirits of all generations.

Our Staff is our family, and we bring this sense of family into our work. Many of us have worked at Geer for decades. We'll work with your personal physician, dentist, or other health care professional.
Geer's Board of Directors reside locally and are dedicated to the Geer mission. Most have been part of the Geer community for many, many years.
Included on the Campus are a variety of living facilities. Geer Village, which provides three different living options, the Beckley House, Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and the Geer Adult Day Center.

Our Culture
Geer has learned that the most important guarantor of our future is the shared mission, faith, and spirit of the individuals who work here. In short, our culture. As a result, we believe that hiring good people and training them well are the most important things we do. We seek to employ not just the most competent professionals that can be found, but, in particular, prospective team members and colleagues who have positive attitudes and generous spirits -- people who will share our faith, mission, and spirit, and help us pass them on to our successors.

Our History
In February 1970, Geer opened the Geer Memorial Health Center, a state-of-the-art nursing facility. In a short period of time the new Center gained a reputation with physicians and professional caregivers alike, as a premiere provider of skilled nursing care. In fact, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) twice awarded Geer its highest honor, "With Commendation."
Geer's original mission was focused only the operation of a skilled nursing facility, but, as the needs of our area continued to evolve, so did the scope of Geer's care.
In forty years since its founding, Geer has evolved into a community institution that is not easy to describe. It has grown from a skilled care nursing facility into a bold and innovative provider of healthcare able to offer a wide range of services.
In 1978 we opened the Geer Adult Day Center. The Geer Adult Day Center is the second oldest, continuously operating adult day center in Connecticut, and one of the oldest in the country. Today, Geer remains committed to giving the elderly an alternative to being left home alone.
In 1980, addressing the isolation faced by the elderly and disabled in rural areas without public transportation, Geer instituted what has now become the largest specialized transportation service in the tri-state area. Geer's fleet of vehicles serves families in an area of more than 500 square miles.
In 1990 Alzheimer's and dementia became classed as a specific diseases, and development of specific treatment strategies for them began. Geer became one of the first healthcare facilities in Connecticut to establish a special unit for the care and treatment of these patients.
In 1994 Geer instituted our "Respite Care" program for families of the tri-state area. If a primary caregiver needed to be away for an overnight trip, or longer, it was often difficult and sometimes impossible to find a trusted person to relieve them. Geer was, and is, delighted to take care of their loved ones during their absence.
In 1995 Geer instituted our Hospice Care program for the terminally ill. Hospice care can be provided at home, in the hospital, or at Geer Nursing.
In 1997 our Physical Therapy department installed the area's first Hydro-Track, an underwater exercise machine that enables the elderly and impaired to exercise in a reduced-weight environment.
In January 2001 Geer completed construction on the Beckley House, providing low-income housing for the area's elderly. The mission and culture of the Beckley House is not simply to provide shelter, but to become a home and "family" from which the residents can continue their lives as independent members of the community.
In 2003 Geer opened a non-profit retail pharmacy.
In 2004 we finished construction on Geer Village.
