Nursing Center Covid-19 Update 3/26/2021
March 26, 2020
To Our Staff, Residents and Family Members:
Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
We need to inform you of one staff member who tested positive for Covid-19 at Geer Nursing and Rehab. Prior to testing the staff member immediately reported the onset of symptoms, was asked to quarantine at home and ultimately tested positive. During resident testing we identified one asymptomatic positive resident case at the nursing home. Through contact tracing we identified a small group of residents who had limited contact with the positive staff person.
All Geer staff practice strict infection control procedures while working. While we must proceed with the positive Covid- 19 protocols, which include contact tracing, we want to assure everyone that we are doing our best to keep everyone safe. Under the guidance of the Torrington Area Health District and the State of Connecticut Epidemiology office, we conducted a full round of resident testing to determine the scope of any spread. We expect to have resident test results over the weekend. If you loved one should test positive or become symptomatic of Covid-19 we will notify you immediately. We are doing everything we can to ensure that we stop the spread of COVID-19 within Geer Nursing, including staying in very close communication with local and state health experts to ensure that we are taking all the appropriate steps.
Please keep in mind that over 95% of our residents and over 85% of staff have received both doses of the vaccine at the nursing home. Both individuals who tested positive this week had not received the vaccine. We remain confident that most of our staff and residents are fully protected. Out of an abundance of caution, the Department of Health has directed us to create a positive/exposed cohort so we can isolate positive/exposed residents on one unit with dedicated staff. With the next round of resident PCR testing on Monday and antigen testing on Thursday, staff will begin testing twice per week.
As we address this outbreak, we must adhere to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and limit in-person visitation. We will continue to offer virtual and window visits on a scheduled basis through our recreation department. To schedule a visit, please contact Jill Simmons, Recreation Director at 860-824-3831 or email@example.com. We understand that connecting with family members is incredibly important to our residents, and you are encouraged to continue to connect virtually. We will keep everyone informed as we move forward. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
